Note: Here’s a generalized explanation
of the difference between Royalty Free photos and Managed
Rights photos.
Royalty Free is a term used for non-specific, generic photos
that are usually purchased from organizations such as
Getty, iStock, Corbis, Jupiter, and many lesser known,
but high-quality on-line galleries.
RF is best distinguished from RM (Rights Managed) photos by
price and content.
RF photos are generic and inexpensive (often $5, but sometimes
$500 when used for advertising and promotional purposes).
Multiple RF photos can also be purchased by subscription.
Rights Managed photos are highly-targeted and most always are
specific in content and always match the theme of a
magazine, promotion campaign, or book publisher. They
range in fee from $75 to $500 depending on placement
in the layout and the press run of the entity. Not often,
but in some cases these fees can be multiplied by a
factor on ten.
