A Threat to Film in Checked Baggage

A Kodak representative recently reported in the StockPhoto Newsgroup about a new piece of X-ray inspection equipment being deployed at airports worldwide. Called the CTX-5000, it is designed to inspect CHECKED baggage only, not carry on.

Operationally, this unit performs two types of scans, using technology similar to a medical CT scan. The first is a general sweep, which is harmless to film. The second is a focused, high-energy scan targeted at any suspicious-looking items identified by the system in the initial sweep. If this second scan happens to strike unprocessed film, it will be ruined. To see the manufacturer's viewpoint, check out their web site at www.invision-tech.com/product/prodover.htm.

The FAA won't disclose which airports use the device, so to be safe, say goodbye to having unprocessed film in checked baggage. Carry it onboard with you. If that's not practical, make prior arrangements with the airline or use alternate methods, like sending the film ahead.
