AUTOMATIC CONTROLS on cameras today make it nearly
impossible not to produce well-exposed, well-focussed
photos. Aperture and film-advance controls, and automatic
focus, however, don't help us to make esthetically better
pictures. Good photo illustrations are more than
technically fine pictures. Unless a photograph conveys a
thought, feeling, insight, a fresh perspective, a creative
composition, it falls short.
Advances in equipment can, however, help us to make more
pictures, and with less adjustment time needed in the
darkroom, give us more time for photographing and
marketing. Our achievements can be accelerated when we can
speed up the mechanical process, just as calculators help
mathematicians, and spell-checkers help writers.
As we move into the Digital Age, we will continue to see
technological improvements in our field of stock
photography. It's nice to have good equipment, but in the
end, it's how you use it that counts. -RE
