Call Waiting--On the Internet?

Yep! GTE Internetworking and Prodigy have teamed up to offer this unique service in selected areas across the country during their rollout. It's called Internet Call Manager (ICM), and works like this. When you're online via (analog) modem, surfing the Internet, and a regular call comes in on that same phone line, you'll get an instant on-screen notification of the incoming voice call. You'll have the option to accept the call (thus canceling your Internet connection), sending a notification to the caller, or not accepting the call and continuing your surfing. The service is being offered by Prodigy to anybody, regardless of which Internet Service Provider you're using. And with Caller ID, you get even more info about the incoming call onscreen. This could be a very cost-effective alternative to adding a second line. Monthly fees start at $4.95. For further details: http://www.prodigy.com

Keeping Your System Current

It's not nearly so easy to overlook if you're running Windows 98, 'cause it's right there on the Start menu: "Windows Update." Visit the site often to keep up with the latest updates, patches, security repairs, and Y2K fixes from Microsoft. Better yet, install their Critical Update Notification software. It will painlessly check whenever you're online to see if Microsoft has any updates deemed "critical" and notify you onscreen. If you're using Windows 95, you can still keep up with patches and fixes from Microsoft's Web site. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
