Long-Distance Charges for Internet Access

Well, now that I have your attention...You've no doubt heard this and many other rumors about how the government (or the phone company, etc.) plans on charging you extra for Internet access. In a word, they're not. How local telephone companies (telcos) get reimbursed by other telcos for completing a call originating not on their network is what's at stake. (i.e., your local phone company is Gem Phone Company. You pick up the phone, dial your buddy in Idaho, whose local phone company is Spuds. Gem pays Spuds a fee for connecting you.) Because Internet users tend to stay on the phone much, much longer than a typical call to your Aunt, and since that ties up phone circuits, and especially since it likely ties up a competitor's circuits, Telco "B" wants to collect charges from Telco "A." It's all very complicated, and there's more, but not for now. The FCC has received hundreds of thousands of Emails on this topic over the last couple of years, and continues to state that it will not change the way we obtain and pay for Internet access.

Digital Cameras

A couple of places on the Web to search out info on digital cameras: http://www.rit.edu/~andpph/photolists.html (lists discussion groups and listservers), http://www.shortcourses.com.
