The Speed of Email Slows

Remember "The check's in the mail?" Well, the same could almost be said about electronic mail. There are, of course, many reasons for slow and delayed Email. And big outages always make the headlines. AOL alone handles over 14 million messages per day, and that's just one provider! And with more and more uses appending files (spreadsheets, word processing, and graphics) to their messages, transmission times can only increase. Each message is broken up into packets to travel the Internet, and at the final destination, it all has to fit together in the correct order. A missing packet equals trashed mail. Many system will keep trying for a 24-hour period to resend, until giving up and returning it to the sender. Add in all the other Email systems, a few spam attacks now and again, and all those gateways (electronic interfaces between one system and another), and it's a wonder it works as well as it does.

A Word About Lists

There're more than 75 photography discussion groups on the Internet. Make sure you are using the right discussion group to ask your questions. If you have a question about lighting techniques, for example, try to find the appropriate list. You'll get feedback quicker and avoid those unruly "comments." You'll find scores of different discussion groups and even more newsgroups, just by using the keyword "photo" at http://www.liszt.com/.

Federal Agencies

Statistics gathered by 70-some government agencies is at your fingertips on the FedStats Web page: http://www.fedstats.gov. It includes news releases, agency contacts, and the most-requested Census Bureau's tables. Sally Katzen, administrator of the OMB's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, emphasizes that there's no data on individuals and that the data presented is already publicly available.
