Congress has passed and President Clinton signed (last Nov.) the Internet Tax Freedom Act, which prohibits new taxes in cyperspace for the next three years (of course, most state and local taxes enacted prior to this federal legislation will still apply). With business transactions on the Web expected to exceed $300 billion by 2002, you can see why it's such a big deal for all the taxing authorities. (And, what about the International taxation issues?) Some handy sites covering U.S. copyright law: http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/ http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/ For nearly half of the Internet users (per a recent study for AOL), Internet access has become a necessity in their lives. Two-thirds would rather have an Internet connection than a telephone, fax or television if stranded on a desert island! Slightly over half prefer using Email over the phone or snailmail to communicate with business associates. And if you're keeping track, women now account for 47% of online users, and 57% of new hookups are by women. |
