STOCKPHOTO Discussion List Moves

The STOCKPHOTO Discussion List and Web Site has a new name: The STOCKPHOTO Network, and a new World Wide Web address: http://www.stockphoto.net/. Previous subscribers to the Discussion List should be automatically registered at the new location. If not (or for new subscribers), send an Email to joelday@listserv.com with SUBSCRIBE STOCKPHOTO First Name Last Name on a separate line in the body of the message. Joel (the list owner) promises significant improvements.

PhotoPro Discussion List Has Changed Servers You can re-subscribe by Emailing to photopro@photonews.com, but your best bet is to visit the newly designed sign-up page on Gary & Jack's Web site: http://lists.photonews.com/guest/RemoteAvailableLists. This new section is really well designed and you can sign up for their newest lists, including PhotoSTOCK and others. And since PhotoASMP is also on the new server, you may want to re-subscribe...although it's been incredibly quiet for a while now.

Free Speech Triumphs!

The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, told the Internet cops to take a hike by striking down the so-called Communications Decency Act. "The interest in encouraging freedom of expression in a democratic society outweighs any theoretical but unproven benefit of censorship," wrote Justice John Paul Stevens. He also echoed many netizens by saying that, "Users seldom encounter content 'by accident.'"

CompuServe On Top

In the first independent ranking of Internet backbones (the cables and computers that interconnect the major networks together), CompuServe came out on top, with PSINet (not to be confused with PhotoSource International) and IBM's Global Net among the worst performers when comparing speed of downloads from the perspective of a typical "end-user." Complete information and results were in the July/August issue of Boardwatch Directory of Internet Service Providers, and should still be available on their Web site (http://www.boardwatch.com).

Shopping For A New Computer?

Better start looking now. You'll have fewer choices this fall and winter. Due to the continued slowdown of consumer demand (it's the lowest it's been since 1989), many stores are reducing shelf space. Most major manufacturers are also planning to introduce fewer models and styles.
