Licensing of Rights

Ownership of copyright permits a photographer to control use of his/her images. The usual method is to license or "sell" usage rights for a variety of purposes, such as in advertising, commercial products, editorial purposes and for multi-media.

A license is the transfer of defined rights for a particular purpose for a limited time. When you license copyright, you retain ultimate ownership and control each of the slices of the copyright "pie". If you sell copyright, you retain nothing. Be aware that the terminology used in the photo industry can be somewhat confusing since the term "sell" is commonly used as in "sale" of usage rights, when "renting" or "licensing" would be more appropriate.
