HOW TO WRITE ATTENTION GRABBING QUERY & COVER LETTERS, by John Wood. This is without doubt one of the most useful books I have come across in many years. Every photographer and photojournalist that is interested in getting assignments from magazines and newspapers should invest in this book. John Wood has done a marvelous job in putting together examples of good and bad letters, and has compared them side by side with concrete reasons to back up why a particular sample letter is good or bad. These kinds of hands-on examples are tremendously useful for everyone, seasoned pro as well as beginner. Remember that photobuyers are busy people, and they don't want to waste their time looking at images that are not professional. If the cover letter is good, in appearance and content, chances are that the buyer will actually spend some time looking at your images. This is why cover letters are so incredibly important and this is why the wealth of knowledge and experience that John Wood provides in his book is so valuable. Buy it. Today. You will not regret it. NIKON CAMERA REPAIR HANDBOOK, by Thomas Tomosy. This book is a good buy for anybody who has, or plans to get, older Nikon equipment in need of repair. There's no doubt that serious money can be saved by doing your own repair of photographic equipment, and this book basically covers it all. The instructions, and troubleshooting, are easy to understand and follow. Guided by photographs and illustrations, the reader will soon be able to do minor repair, and after some experience tackle some of the bigger jobs. While some repairs are better left to the professional technicians at Nikon, others are well within your grasp guided by this book. Mastering the Basics of Photography, By Susan McCartney. It is rare for a professional photographer to also be a skilled writer and talented educator. Susan McCartney possesses all these skills. As a result her book, "Mastering the Basics of Photography," grants the reader the tools and insights to really understand the basics of photography. Too many books aimed at beginners and/or photographers in need of a refresher, are either too shallow or talk down to the reader. Susan McCartney's book avoids these pitfalls. She fully shares her vast knowledge and guides the reader comfortably and clearly through complex issues like depth of field, composition, self-assignments and much more. I particularly like the ten self-assignments included. All of them are very useful and skill-building. At $19.95, this book is a great value and one to read over and over again. Even if you've been a professional photographer for ten years, chances are that you will still learn from this book.
